Early Life and Playing Career
Gareth Southgate was born on September 3, 1970, in Watford, England. He began his professional football career at Crystal Palace in 1988 as a defender and midfielder. Southgate later played for Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, and Crystal Palace again before retiring in 2006.
Coaching and Management
After retiring as a player, Southgate transitioned to coaching, serving as the manager of Middlesbrough's reserve team. In 2016, he was appointed as England's interim manager following the departure of Sam Allardyce. In November 2016, Southgate was named England's permanent manager.
International Success
Under Southgate's leadership, the England men's senior team reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, their best result in the tournament since 1990. They also reached the final of the 2020 UEFA European Championship, their first major final since 1966.
